Overview of the Kicking Game

The kicking game is arguably the most exciting aspect of football. Few other plays cover the amount of yardage involved in kick-offs, punts and field goal attempts and have such an impact on field position.

Second, anybody can describe whether a kick, punt, or snap was good or not. We want you to understand why you missed a kick, shanked a punt or bounced a snap. Armed with this information, when something goes wrong, you'll know how to correct it.

Lastly, we hope to inspire you to practice what you learn. With enough repetition, you'll develop "muscle memory" that will result in your performance becoming automatic in a game.

Special teams account for one-third of a football team's game plan, yet it rarely receives a comparable amount of attention in terms of preparation. More often than not, the team that excels in its kicking program wins the close games. For a team at any level of football, at least two games per season will be decided by special teams play.

It's our belief at least the first 25 minutes of every practice should be devoted to the kicking game. This is the time when the players are fresh and concentration is greatest. If specialty work occurs at the end of practice, you may not get a maximum effort.
